Tea Drinkers Waste More Time At Work

Is tea the drink of choice for some of your employees? Well, be aware that they might be straining company productivity levels along with that tea bag.

A new T6 survey finds the average tea-drinking British worker spends nearly a half an hour (24 minutes, to be exact) making tea every day. In terms of lost productivity, it adds up to 400 Pounds in lost work hours every year, and 190 days in lost work time over the span of a career.

T6 bases its findings on a survey of 1,000 British office workers.

Of course, coffee is king on this side of the pond: The United States ranks a lowly 13th in world tea consumption, and CareerBuilder reports 37% of American workers drink two or more cups of coffee every day at work. CareerBuilder also finds American workers are more likely to buy themselves a cup of coffee as a reward for a job well done.

We Americans tend to relate to tea like we relate to soccer: The rest of the world is obsessed with it, but it's just not our thing. World Cup? Cup of tea? What? No, thanks. The whole tea experience hasn't been the same for us since we dumped all that tea into Boston Harbor.

These days our national love affair with coffee is reflected in the U.S. productivity rate, which increased 2.3% last quarter alone. Our collective fear of job loss surely has a lot to do with the increase, but a good coffee buzz doesn't hurt matters, either.

Now the tea drinkers among us will note the amount of time coffee drinkers waste in line at coffee shops and spend brewing a new pot of coffee in the break room. So maybe the productivity losses even out in the end. But if you buy into the results of this survey, you might want to hire coffee drinkers if you're looking for a productivity boost.
