Employees' Personal Postage Costing Employers Millions

Have you ever sent a personal letter or package from work at your employer's expense to avoid standing in line at the post office?

Yes? Well, you're not the only one and it's costing employers millions.

Parcel delivery and returns company Collect+ asked British employees if they've ever sent personal mail from work and let the company pick up the tab. Roughly 10% of employees surveyed are sending ten or more packages per year at their employer's expense, and 15% are slowing down their corporate postal areas with a constant stream of personal mail. By the way, how much would it cost to ship it by Ground vs. Next Day?

About one-third of employees (32%) say that sending their personal snail mail from work is a way to avoid lines at the post office, while one-quarter said the post office's banker hours make it hard to get there in time. Hmm.

Even better, roughly 6% of employees admit to having "embarrassing" packages delivered to their office address. Hey, what's in the box? Um, it's from my grandma. And thanks to online shopping, employees are able to receive packages at work all the time now! Why ship something to your home address when the box might sit on your doorstep all day and potentially get stolen? No, we'll have our software and sex toys shipped directly to our desks. Many thanks, modern technology.

Of course, we're talking about British employees using the Royal Mail instead of our own messed up mail service here in the states, but it would be a rather interesting question to pose to American workers. One wonders if there's also a recessionary component going on here. All those "Forever" stamps just keep getting more expensive thanks to constant rate hikes, and your company hasn't given you a raise in two years. So your employer can certainly shell out $2.67 in postage, right? Plus, it's raining, the new suede shoes you just bought online would get all wet if you walk to the post office, and we all know how important employee productivity is today. Sending and receiving your personal mail at work allows you to be more...efficient. Yes, that's the word! Just leave the rain/sleet/snow stuff to the professionals and slap your employer with the postage bill. It's all in a day's work, apparently.
