Workplace Trends: The Workplace Advice Bot

Have a problem at work and need some advice? Never fear, the workplace advice bot is here!

We now live in a world where bots are beginning to offer workplace advice. Or should I say, where bots are beginning to pull up relevant business articles for us to read on the subway, during a colleague's boring PowerPoint presentation or while a co-worker is humming her favorite song for the 20th time today.

Harvard Business Review is using "Slackbot," Slack's automated assistant, to put hundreds of "how-to" workplace articles under the noses of workers everywhere. Now we can Slack our way to workplace success, one stupid question at a time!

The hope is that HBR's workplace advice bot will become a one-stop shop for dealing with annoying co-workers (you're still welcome to visit my workplace blog, though!) as well as a whole host of career-related questions. Forget workplace blogs, they are so 2015. We want advice, and we want it at the click of a button! As a article explains:

The articles all follow the same template, with distinct sections like case studies and do's and don'ts that are easily disaggregated. It broke those articles up into those distinct chunks and messages them to subscribers one chunk at a time.

Once a Slack team owner installs the bot, they can invite other users to sign up. Subscribers can choose the frequency of the messages (daily or weekly) and delivery time.

Cool. Let's just hope these workplace advice bots offer good, workable advice, I guess. For now, HBR waits to see how many employees will subscribe to its bot while Slack gets a cool little workplace advice thingie to add to its product. All users receive the same content (er, articles), but down the line the bot might offer searchable content that can be personalized to each employee.

Newspaper advice columnists, career coaches and random workplace bloggers beware: The future is almost here! Bots will disaggregate us all soon, leaving us to offer useless advice to our pets, our children and random people who don't want it. Maybe we can all become our own Slack team owner instead?

Employees Blame Technology For Slowing Them Down At Work

Do you feel like you're always working, but never getting very much done? If so, you're not alone. Too much technology, and too much red tape, keep slowing us down at work. But technology, and more of it, is supposed to make our lives easier! Too much technology, however, does not compute for employees.
