Managers, Just Offer Job Applicants a Pane Sandwich Already

If you had two job offers on the table, which company would you choose: the one that offers free food, or the one that does not?

A new employee survey from ezCater tells us that more than two-thirds of employees would bite at the job offer from the company that feeds its employees!

Hey, we can't all work at Google with its organic cafeterias, fleet of colorful bicycles and interview questions even its former CEO can't answer. Then again, Google is in California, where the produce is always fresh because that's where it's grown. Whenever I visit California, I go to the grocery store with the express purpose of standing between the oranges and nectarines to admire their perfect symmetry and lack of bruising. The produce there is, quite simply, incredible.

But back to the ezCater survey of more than 1,000 employees. Good coffee is a good perk, apparently! Nearly one-third of employees surveyed said their employer provides food at least once a month to employees, but nearly half said nobody delivers food to their office, well, ever. In other words, let them eat cake!

Good Food Makes For A Good Meeting
Why would an employer want to provide food when it's a bottom-line cost and could lead to potential allergic reactions? Every office has a food critic, too.

Well, chew on this, managers: More than three-fourths (76%) of employees said meetings are better attended when there's food, and two-thirds (66%) said having food provided saves time in their workday! The vast majority (90%) agree that food keeps customers and prospects happy, while more than three-fourths (80%) agree that food is what lures people to meetings. In fact, verging on two-thirds (61%) said offering food at meetings makes it easier to close a deal!

I have written past blog posts that support such findings. Takeout and food delivery service Seamless surveyed nearly 1,100 full-time employees a few years ago and found free food was the deciding factor in getting one-third surveyed to show up for meetings they otherwise would avoid like the plague! However, one-fifth (20%) needed to know what was on the menu first before making their final decision whether or not to attend.

If you're going to offer free food, just make sure the quality of the food matches the quality of the company's interview questions. Surveys from the bowels of the Great Recession found that many employees were noticing a big decline in catered sandwich quality. Employers went cheap on everything from catered breads to meats to chips to save a little bit of money, but they paid a quiet price in office morale.

So if you want to put your money where your corporate mouth is in 2017, then order the high-quality sandwiches with the good cheese! It could be the deciding factor for talented job candidates juggling multiple job offers. Stick a fork in this blog post, it's done.
