2019 workplace trends: microchipping of the workforce

It's the stuff of science fiction, but employers can literally get underneath employees' skin by implanting them with microchips. And now a major British company is reportedly planning to do just that!?

A story in Britain's Telegraph reveals that a few "major UK companies" are apparently looking at microchipping a percentage of their workforce for...well, why would they want to embed RFID chips in some of their employees? I'll let the (subscription-blocked) story opener explain:

British companies are planning to microchip some of their staff in order to boost security and stop them accessing sensitive areas.

Biohax, a Swedish company that provides human chip implants, told the Telegraph it was in talks with a number of UK legal and financial firms to implant staff with the devices.

Okay, deep breath, everyone! First off, we don't know the names of these companies, and they're still in "talks," which could mean anything. Second, we don't know what "some of their staff" means. Does this mean five employees, or five hundred? So, there are still many questions.

On the other hand, the Telegraph is a major newspaper and tech enthusiasts all across Europe have already had microchips implanted in themselves. So it's real. It's RFID.

Feeling Chipper?
In the States, a few employers pioneered the microchipping of their employees like pets until state laws stepped in and ended the practice. That was in 2007. Now we have Trump and a right-leaning U.S. Supreme Court shaping federal workplace law. Here, you can borrow my paper bag.


How does this "chipping" work? Well, a very small chip is typically implanted in the employee's hand, while the privacy and ethical issues will be handled later. Maybe in an upcoming episode of Black Mirror or something. I hope Jodie Foster directs another episode.

Is this a workplace trend for 2019? I don't have a crystal ball, but I can say with a high degree of certainty that it's almost 2019. Just be aware that the future is already here -- in fact, the future was already here ten years ago -- and your employer could start offering you chips at some point. And I'm not talking about Cool Ranch Doritos.
